How I started ★
From Fern started at my parents house during lockdown in June 2020 when I was coming to the end of a 1 year business course and really didn't know what was next. I had no design or textiles background, but after a few youtube videos I had made 10 headbands with some old block print fabric that I found and put them up on Instagram to see if anyone wanted to buy one; they quickly did and it all started there! I then started making some waistcoats, and in winter 2020 I did a few Christmas Fairs around Suffolk, and completely loved meeting cusotmers and selling things i had made.
From Fern started at my parents’ house during lockdown in June 2020, when I was coming to the end of a one-year business course and honestly had no idea what was next. I had no background in fashion, design or textiles, but after watching a few YouTube videos I made ten headbands from some old Indian block print fabric I’d found at home. I put them on Instagram just to see if anyone might want one… and to my surprise, they sold! That was the beginning of From Fern.
I started making waistcoats next, and by Christmas 2020 I was doing local Christmas fairs around Suffolk. I absolutely loved meeting customers and selling pieces I’d made myself, and that’s when I realised this could maybe become something bigger than a lockdown hobby. As From Fern grew on social media and online orders picked up, I knew I needed help with production. Through a very lucky introduction I met my incredible tailor in Delhi, and I’ll always be so grateful for that. We met in Amsterdam in April 2023 and started working together straight away. In March 2024 I travelled to India for the first time to visit him and also spent time with my fabric supplier in Jaipur. Seeing the craftsmanship behind every piece and building those relationships in person was one of the most inspiring experiences I’ve ever had.
When I got back from India, I took the leap, left my part-time job and made From Fern my full-time job. Since then we’ve done pop-ups in Durham, Clapham, Chelsea, Soho, Suffolk and Hampshire, and last October I even opened my own shop on the King’s Road for three weeks — something that would have felt completely impossible when I was sewing headbands at my parents’ dining table. I honestly can’t believe it’s been six years of growing this little business. I’m so grateful to every single person who has supported From Fern along the way. Your orders, messages, visits to pop-ups and encouragement have made this dream possible, and I can’t wait to keep creating beautiful new pieces that I hope you’ll love for years to come!
